General Introduction to Base Oil Hydroprocessing

This entry will give an overview of base oil hydroprocessing, which is a method of manufacturing lubricant base oils and touch upon the key processes involved.

High-quality lubricating oils are critical for the machinery of modern society. Crude oil is distilled and fractionated into many products such as gasoline and jet fuel; one portion of crude petroleum forms the base of lubricating oil base stocks used in the lubricating of internal combustion engines.

Examples of Lubricating Products Containing Base Oils

Many lubricating products in common use contain base oil. Examples are motor oils for cars and trucks; industrial engine oils (railroad, marine, gas engine); tractor hydraulic fluids; transmission fluids, gear oils, greases, refrigeration oils, turbine oils, compressor oils, and white oils (technical and pharmaceutical grade).
