Classification

Genus Cystoisospora was proposed as a new member of the phylum Apicomplexa, class Coccidia, order Eimeriida, and family Sarcocystidae in 1977 by Dr. J. K. Frenkel to contain the mammalian coccidia in the genus Isospora that had recently been found in 1972 to make monozoic tissue cysts (cysts that contain a single asexual infective stage called a zoite) in the tissues of experimentally infected rodents (paratenic hosts). The sporulated oocysts of this genus contain two sporocysts that do not contain a Stieda body, and each sporocyst encloses four sporozoites consistent with other heteroxenous tissue cyst-forming coccidia Toxoplasma, Hammondia, Neospora, Besnoitia, Frenkelia, and Sarcocystis present in this family. The type species is C. felis.
