Glucogenesis

Definition

Gluconeogenesis refers to the biosynthetic pathway of hexoses from noncarbohydrate substrates such as acetate, glycerol, pyruvate, etc. This can be achieved by conversion of the precursor into an intermediate of glycolysis and the reverse of this pathway (with the appropriate bypass of three irreversible enzymatic steps). The phylogenetic distribution of the gluconeogenetic enzymes suggests an early origin of this anabolic pathway, before the emergence of the different glycolytic pathways.
