Glossary
- Anthropogenic eutrophication:
-
An increased input of nutrients (namely, nitrogen and phosphorous) into the ecosystem caused by human activities, stimulating proliferation of photoautotrophic organisms.
- Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae):
-
A group of photosynthesizing prokaryotic organisms inhabiting a wide range of biotopes, including both planktonic and benthic species in freshwater, brackish and coastal marine ecosystems, and also living in soil, on glaciers, in volcanic hot springs or deserts, or symbiotically with fungi (in lichens), ferns (in Azolla), or molluscs.
- Cyanobacterial water bloom:
-
Massive proliferation and accumulation of planktonic cyanobacteria, sometimes defined as cyanobacterial cell densities above 20,000 cells/mL (chlorophyll a 10 μg/L).
- Cyanotoxins (cyanobacterial toxins):
-
Toxic chemicals produced by cyanobacteria. The cyanotoxins implicated in or associated with human or animal poisoning incidents and...
