Over the past half century, environmental education (EE) has evolved as a field of professional practice in response to widespread sociocultural concerns about an increasingly serious array of environmental problems. Historically, public awareness and concern grew in parallel with accumulating scientific evidence of incipient ecological degradation, population-resource issues, and a broadening range of threats to the quality of life and the sustainability of ecosystems. It seems no mere coincidence that ecological science expanded during this time and gained credibility within the academy.
