Introduction

In many countries, the education of secondary school mathematics teachers traditionally includes a strong emphasis on advanced mathematics courses at the college or university level. Such advanced mathematics studies are included either as an integral part of the teacher education program or as a prerequisite for being admitted to such a program (Tatto et al. 2009). The assumption underlying this tradition is that academic studies of mathematics, i.e., knowledge of university mathematics, would enhance teachers’ knowledge of mathematics, which, in turn, will contribute to school mathematics teaching.
