Neogene Period

The Neogene Period is the second period of the Cenozoic Era, and it extended from 23.03 to 18.06 million years ago, a duration of 4.97 million years (old proposal). The latest proposal of the 2010 International Stratigraphic Chart states that it lasted from 23.03 to 2.588 million years ago. The Neogene System includes the rocks that formed during the Neogene Period, which is equivalent to the former Upper Tertiary System and includes the Miocene Series and Pliocene Series. It can be further subdivided into six stages. The Neogene Period was a time of tremendous development of herbaceous plants, and many modern genera and species started to develop. The Neogene Period was also the time of the development of Artiodactyla and the rapid evolution of elephants. Modern mammals developed, and their appearance was akin to the modern types.
