Europe was the first continent to establish geoparks with the name of a continent. In August 1996, during the 30th International Geological Congress in Beijing, Guy Martini of France and Nickolas Zouros of Greece proposed establishing ‘European Geological Parks (Eurogeoparks)’ and won the support of the European Union. In June 2000, the European Geopark Network (EGN) was formed. In November 2000, the first European Geopark Conference was held in Spain with the establishment of the first four European geoparks. By the end of 2017, the European Geopark Network included 70 national geoparks in 23 countries.
