The Giant’s Causeway and Causeway Coast lie at the foot of basalt cliffs along the Atlantic coast on the edge of the Antrim plateau in the Moyle District Council in Northern Ireland. They cover an area of 0.7 km2 and consist of approximately 40,000 massive black basalt columns that stick out of the sea. This dramatic landscape name came from the legends of giants walking over the ocean to Scotland. Geological studies of these formations over the last 300 years have greatly contributed to the development of the earth sciences.
