This section is located in the Jiangnan Basin between the Yangtze and Cathaysian plates. This area subsided continually in the early Palaeozoic and Triassic and extended south to the Laibin district in eastern Guangxi Province. The boundary is marked by the first occurrence of conodont fossils such as Clarkina postbitteri and is at the bottom of the Laibin marble bed, which overlies Maokou Formation 6 k in the Penglai Beach section (Penglaitian Section), with an evolutionary lineage from C. postbitteri hongshuiensis to C. dukouensis. It is approximately consistent with the middle-upper Absaroka megasequence boundary. The Laibin marble at this site represents continuous deposition of the Maokou Formation and Hesha Formation. This location also records a major extinction and succession of conodonts, brachiopods, corals and ammonoids. This GSSP can be correlated with other GSSPs in continental facies successions.
