Motivation
Was sind beispielhafte Innovationen?
Abstract
This article addresses the in-memory platform SAP HANA. First, it is being illustrated why SAP HANA is indeed a real platform. For this purpose, it is being defined what can be seen as a platform in the context of (business) informatics and which parts a platform can be composed of. Afterwards, the characteristics which a platform should have for being able to provide value for the parties involved are being looked at.
Subsequently, it is being explained to what extend SAP HANA can be seen as an innovative technology, what the differences to existing systems are and which opportunities are being offered to transform the technical capabilities of the platform into new business models and commercial success. For this purpose, a closer look at the technical features of SAP HANA is being taken. Especially the advantages of the in-memory technology compared to conventional disc-based databases are being examined. Furthermore, column-based data storage, parallelization and the overcoming of the traditional separation of transactional and analytical data management are being discussed.
The article closes with an examination at the use cases of SAP HANA. After taking a look at the different models for the platforms architecture and the options for deployment, possible business scenarios are being described. It is being explained that companies are facing a tidal wave of available data nowadays, why it is so important for their future success to leverage the information included therein and which applications, combined with the SAP HANA platform, make this possible.
