Abstract

Hepatic and biliary emergencies have an important impact on the workload of an emergency unit. However, the symptoms are likely to be unspecific in the non-traumatic acute abdomen. Most patients present with right upper quadrant pain and tenderness, fever, and jaundice. Rapidly establishing the diagnosis is mandatory and, in experienced hands, the chosen imaging techniques are powerful tools by which to narrow the diagnosis.
