Abstract

Pneumonia is the most common infectious disease worldwide (Lopez and Murray 1998). The frequency of community-acquired pneumonia in Germany is estimated at 400,000–600,000 patients each year and about 200,000 of these are hospitalized (Höffken et al. 2009). The mortality is about 13% in inpatients (AQUA-Institut 2015) and <1% in outpatients (Bauer et al. 2006). Incidence and mortality increase with age, in particular regarding the increasing number of patients with comorbidities like emphysema and COPD (Höffken et al. 2009). Incidence and mortality of hospital-acquired pneumonia in intensive care units are higher than on a regular ward especially in patients with noninvasive or invasive ventilation (Kohlenberg et al. 2010). On regular wards the reported incidence is substantially lower with about 1 pneumonia/1000 patient days (Stausberg and Azaouagh 2008).
