Abstract

Crow and Champagne (1971) and Moore (1977) have observed that the growth, mixing and noise production of jet flows are sensitive to harmonic forcing. This effective control of large eddy behaviour is achieved here in a model of an axisymmetric jet developing from rest. The unforced model jet shows good agreement with many experimentally observed flows. Harmonic excitation is applied to the model jet and the changes in frequency and amplitude cause distinct changes in the wavelengths of the jet eddies. This resulting large eddy behaviour is consistent with many features of the non-linear behaviour observed in forced jets.
