Abstract

Multiwire proportional chambers (MWPCs) operated at very low gas pressures are shown to be an efficient timing and imaging tool for heavily ionizing particles. Their properties are described. Amplification in steps is shown to be feasible at low pressure, providing higher gains and gating possibilities. Both techniques can be extended to single electron detection at gains >107with possible applications to photon detectors. A new type of a 4π Tracking Range and Energy Chamber, TREC, for heavy ions is presented.
