Abstract

A review of the various observational indications for mass outflows from visible T Tauri stars and IR-sources of similar luminosity (0.1 L ≲ L ≲ 100 L) is given. Stellar emission line profiles, radio continuum studies, CO line observations of surrounding high-velocity molecular gas, and optical investigations of associated Herbig-Haro (HH) objects and optical jets are discussed. The latter investigations have shown that some of these young stellar objects are capable of generating highly-collimated bipolar flows. These jets have typical lengths of 0.01 to 0.2 pc, opening angles of about 3 to 10 deg, and their measured radial velocities range from 50 to 400 km/s. The properties of these jets and their relation to HH objects are detailly discussed. A model is proposed in which HH objects are powered by jets emanating from nearby young stars.
