Abstract
It is proposed that equilibrium configurations of relativistic stars should correspond to the maximum of the entropyfor given baryon number and mass. This principle is a substitute for the standard assumption of local isotropy(isotropic pressure). When applied to supermassive stars it leads to the prediction that stars with mass smaller than a few million solar masses evolve without catastrophic collapse until the central densityand temperature are high enough for nuclear reactions to take place.
