Abstract

The Kerr coefficient B of aqueous solutions of the nonionic amphiphiles C6E3, C8E 4, C10E5 and C12E6 is measured as a function of the temperature T in a temperature region close to the cloud point, and at the concentration corresponding to the minimum of the cloud curve. In all the investigated systems B is found to increase as T approaches the critical temperature T c following a power-law behavior, B≈(T c T)ψ, with an exponent ψ≈0.9. In the case of the system C12E6-H2O which was studied in a wide temperature range, the data are consistent with a moderate micellar growth as a function of T.
