Abstract

It would seem self-evident that, in order to deal effectively with sexual issues therapists of all persuasions must be informed about sexuality, as free of prejudice as possible in relation to sex, and be comfortable hearing and talking about sex. These qualities are not common in our society, where silence about sexual matters alternates with sudden, often prejudiced or salacious outbursts. It follows that education about sexual matters must form part of training courses for therapists and that the continuing professional development of therapists also needs to help them stay abreast of developments in the field.
