Abstract

Some might assert that a separate chapter devoted to women is superfluous. Yet, this focus is critical for a variety of reasons. First, biological sex and societally constructed and imposed gender roles have often been inextricably intertwined throughout history, resulting in the construction of specified spheres of acceptable activity for women. An understanding of women and their needs in the context of treatment requires an examination of this relationship (Clarke, 1990).
