Abstract
Evidence-based care is an ideal that the health service and the clinical professions have wholeheartedly adopted (Rosenberg and Donald, 1995; NHS Executive, 1996), at the same time acknowledging that much care and treatment does not yet have an evidence base. Clinical guidelines, based on up-to-date evidence or the best expert opinion, have been hailed as a way in which to reduce the huge variation in health care that is seen throughout the UK (Duff et al., 1996).
