Abstract

Vision is the dominant sense and the one that provides us with the greatest opportunity for learning. If we come upon roadworks, the noise of the drill and the smell of the hot tarmac give us some awareness of what is taking place, but it is the sight of the traffic cones, workmen and heavy machinery that coordinates these other sensory impressions. Within seconds, we understand the area of the road being worked upon, the direction we must take in order to avoid it, how much of the road is being dug up and the size, extent and nature of the operation.
