A Citizen of the World of Mathematics 1935–1937

In May 1935 Zariski left the Institute with Yole and the children. In what would be their last trip to Europe until after the war, they visited Yole's family in Rome, and in what would be their final trip to Kobrin, they spent the summer with Hannah and Moses and Zariski's three older sisters. Shepsel and Zila had already settled in Israel, but the older sisters, who had also bought land in Israel, had stayed behind, hoping to convince Hannah to go with them.

Zariski and Yole also did their best to convince her to leave Kobrin; although they had no intuition of the horror that lay ahead, they repeated their longstanding invitation to visit America. With her usual strongmindedness, however, Hannah cleaved to the place where she'd raised her children and buried both her husbands.
