The competencies in defining design strategies and the know-how necessary to manufacture innovative products are the effective knowledge capital for enterprises that operate in competitive sectors. Within this framework, the paper discusses a conceptual and computational approach to the design of a Core Knowledge Management system that supports people involved in the design and manufacturing of complex mechanical products. In particular we describe the design process and context in which the system is operating to acquire, represent, share and exploit expert designers’ knowledge in Fontana Pietro SpA, an Italian enterprise leader in the development of dies for automotive industry.
