The reader will find in this chapter a brief introduction to the concepts of surface tension, contact angle, and Laplace equation, which will be used to model the liquid bridge and compute the capillary forces as it will be explained in Chap. 7. Based on these concepts, some arguments will be given at the end of the chapter to justify a priori the use of surface tension as a gripping principle.
