CO line maps can be used to study the feeding mechanisms of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and address the issue of how nuclear activity can be sustained in galaxies. The use of other tracers of the dense gas phase can shed light on the feedback influence of activity on the chemistry of molecular gas in galaxies. In this paper we present the results issued from the NUclei of GAlaxies (NUGA) project, a high-resolution (0.5-1) CO survey of low luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs) carried out with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI). The efficiency of gravity torques as a possible mechanism responsible for the feeding of LLAGNs can be quantified for the first time on scales (~10–100 pc) which are known to be critical for the tranfser of angular momentum. We also present the results of a survey which studies the excitation and the chemistry of the dense molecular gas phase in a sample of nearby AGNs and Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) near and far.
