Abstract
I first met Matt on April 17, 1987. He was an 8th-grader, and his mom brought him to the Fourth Colorado Mathematical Olympiad. Matt was holding in his hands his baby sister. A month later I met the three in Washington, D.C., where Matt was on the Colorado team for National Competition of MATHCOUNTS (and I was a national judge). The following year, in 1988, Matt won third prize in the Colorado Mathematical Olympiad. His grades in school were low; even his geometry grade was a C. I asked his fine math teacher Judy Williamson.
