A 56-year-old man was found to have lymphocytosis on a preemployment examination. He denied having fever, weight loss and night sweats. Physical examination showed no lymphadenopathy or hepatosplenomegaly. Peripheral blood examination revealed a total leukocyte count of 22, 100/μl with 71% lymphocytes, 23% neutrophils, 4% monocytes, 2% eosinophils, and 0% basophils (Figs. 26.1 and 26.2). His hemoglobin was 14 g/dl, hematocrit 43%, and platelets 190, 000/μl. A bone marrow examination revealed lymphocytic infiltration (Figs. 26.3 and 26.4).
