The North Carolina Respiratory Model

A Multipurpose Model for Studying the Control of Breathing

  • Chapter
Bioengineering Approaches to Pulmonary Physiology and Medicine

Abstract

Computer-based mathematical models of respiration have been used for some decades to study respiratory control. Such models can mimic both steady state and dynamic behaviors to a wide variety of forcings[1] and have been particularly useful in gaining understanding of some of the chemical and circulatory factors underlying unstable, periodic breathing of the Cheyne-Stokes type[2]–[4].
