Cable Failure Modes and Effects Risk Analysis Perspectives

Probabilistic Safety Assessment and Management

Abstract

A March 1975 cable fire at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant in the United States provided new insights into the impact of fire-induced cable damage on electrical circuits. New fire protection requirements promulgated by the USNRC following this fire require that licensee to conduct a post-fire safe shutdown analysis that includes consideration of fire-induced circuit effects. Cable failure modes and effects circuit analysis is an ongoing area of technical challenge and regulatory focus. Effort are underway to develop risk-informed approaches to resolution of the remaining challenges.

This work was supported by the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research and was performed in part at Sandia National Laboratories. Sandia is a multiprogram laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, a Lockheed Martin Company, for the U. S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under Contract DE-AC04-94AL 85000.
