Abstract

The Capetian achievements, territorial, political, administrative, and their acceptance by the French people, were the vital advances along the road towards the creation of France. But by themselves these products of three centuries of patient state-building were not enough, and if they were to endure they had somehow to be induced to come together in a single organic whole. Breath must enter into the dry bones.
