Cross-wall construction

Abstract

In cross-wall construction the loads are carried by walls which are at right angles to the length of the building. These walls may be of brick, block or concrete. The advantages of cross-wall construction are:

• (i) simple construction;

• (ii) the system allows repetition and standardization of components and is suitable for prefabrication;

• (iii) the front and rear walls not being load bearing, a variety of methods and materials can be adopted for infilling panels and cladding;

• (iv) protruding columns and beams are not required;

• (v) the system is economical in labour and materials and construction costs are low.
