Abstract

Our discussion of the properties and characteristics of a number of basic metal-forming processes has shown clearly that the soundness of the flow depends, to a very considerable degree, on the geometry of the pass. We have seen that, even in the case of simple conical drawing or extruding, changes in the die angle alone may bring about conditions that favour the onset of unsoundness or even of complete material failure. The problem of the geometry of the pass and, therefore, of the tool design assumes even greater importance in the rotary operations which are characterised by high levels of redundancy and consequently by very severe forming conditions.
