Abstract
The Croquet Player marks a return to the allegorical mood of The Island of Doctor Moreau and Mr. Blettsworthy on Rampole Island, but here the problem of evil is discussed from a rather different angle. It was written in 1936, at a time when Wells was deeply distressed by the horror of the Spanish Civil War and the widespread growth of tyranny in Germany, Italy and elsewhere. This short but profoundly disturbing and impressive tale is saturated with the mood of disillusionment associated with that period.
