Patterns of CNS Involvement in Malignant Lymphoma

  • Chapter
CNS Complications of Malignant Disease

Abstract

It is now well-recognised that the malignant lymphomas may be complicated by involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) (Davison and Michaels, 1930; Jones, 1974; Sparling et al., 1947; Williams et al., 1959). The first case report was that of Murchison (1870) who described a case of lymphadenoma in a child in whom a tumour encroaching on the foramen magnum was found to be infiltrating the dura mater at autopsy. Shortly after the turn of the century Welch (1910) and then Guillan et al. (1925) described cord compression due to an extradural deposit of lymphoma. The first case of intracerebral lymphoma was described by Bailey (1929), although he named it perithelial sarcoma. An extensive literature has accumulated on the subject since then, and it has become clear that meningitis and extradural cord compression occur considerably more frequently than intracerebral deposits of lymphoma. Much emphasis has been placed on the relevance of the precise histological diagnosis and the presence or absence of bone marrow infiltration.
