Abstract

Despite the continual warrings, invasions and counter-invasions that occupied most European countries for much of the Middle Ages, there can be no doubt that, in certain vital respects, Europe was very much more of a unity than it is now, despite our proud claim to have a European Economic Community. The major factors governing this situation were the Church, trade, and even the wars themselves.
