Abstract

The importance and influence of various electro-discharge machining parameters such as, the gap voltage, gap current, dielectric fluid pressure, electrode material, and impulse frequency are discussed. It is found that these parameters have a significant influence on machining characteristics such as metal removal rate, dimensional accuracy and surface finish. Among electrode materials (brass, copper and graphite) used, graphite exhibits superior quality, with respect to machining characteristics except for surface finish. A simple relationship evolved from the experiments, shows that low voltages exhibit high metal removal rates with poor surface finish while high gap voltages give lower metal removal rates, fine surface finish and good dimensional accuracy.
