Abstract

As part of the Second UKEMS Collaborative Study, benzidine (BZD) and its structural analogue, 4,4″-diaminoterphenyl (DAT), were examined for mutagenicity in Chinese hamster V79 cells. Initially, tests were conducted with metabolic activation using S9 samples (uninduced rat, mouse and chicken, and Aroclor 1254-induced rat) prepared for the Collaborative Study by T.M. Brooks (Shell). In light of the negative results obtained with the established mutagen/ carcinogen BZD, subsequent studies were performed using the following additional modifications to the metabolic activation system.
