Abstract

The conferences of Vittel and New Delhi were both events I covered as a journalist in the latter part of 1983; they were actually within two months of each other. The Franco-African summit, technically known as the conference of France and African States, was held early in October in Vittel. This is a pleasant spa town in the Vosges in Eastern France - a sort of French Harrogate in atmosphere. The conference was held in the old spa building, now the casino, run by that great French institution, the Club Mediterrane. It was the tenth such summit to have been held, but it was the first I had ever had to report on at first hand.
