Abstract
Esther Summerson has just been appointed companion to Ada Clare, a young ward of the Court of Chancery, with her cousin Richard, and is travelling with them to her employer’s house in St. Albans. On the way they spend the night at Mrs Jellyby’s in London and, going for a walk the next morning (in Chapter 5) they meet Miss Flite, whom they had already met in Court the day before. She insists on inviting them to her lodgings:
