Abstract
In recent years a considerable amount of information has been obtained on the sources and actions of DA in peripheral tissues. Most of the knowledge we have now on DA has been shown to be extremely useful in the clarification of certain aspects of cardiovascular and renal physiology, as well as for the understanding of the pathophysiology of disorders affecting those systems, such as hypertension and heart failure (Clark, 1985). Also, it should be stressed that the development and use of new drugs acting via the activation or blockade of DA receptors in conditions such as hypertension and heart failure are in part related to the recent advances made in the research on the actions of DA and its role in sympathetic neurotransmission (Goldberg, 1972; Brodde, 1982; Lokhandwala and Barrett, 1982; Willems et al., 1985).
