Abstract

The German attack on the Soviet Union and a quick occupation of the whole of Poland by the Nazis made fundamental changes in the country. The area of the General Gouvernement was enlarged by the three south-east Polish districts: Lwów, Stanisławów and Tarnopol, with 45 554km2 and a population of 4574 776. Wołyń and Polesie were incorporated into Reichskomissariat Ukraine. districts Wilno and Nowogródek into Reichskomissariat Ostland. with the decision to give Wilno to Lithuania and to incorporate the district of Białystok into East Prussia.1
