Abstract
We arrived in New York on 16 March 1940 and after being away four years and six months, it was almost as thrilling to return to the Apple as it had been the first time I came there in 1927. Thanks to the management of the Carlton in Alexandria, who had paid our fare from Naples to New York, I had $100 when I landed. That wasn’t much money, but at least I could make it last until I found work. This was not too difficult as I had not been away long enough to be forgotten.
