Strategies to Reduce the Effort of Breathing: Electromyographic and Inspirometry Biofeedback

Abstract

This paper reports on a new methodology which utilizes upper thoracic electromyographic and inspirometry feedback in a desensitization and generalization training protocol. This strategy teaches subjects to reduce the electromyographic activity recorded from the accessory muscles of breathing, increase inhalation volume, inhibit thoracic breathing when enhancing abdominal breathing and reduces the conditioned asthmatic response to various stimuli.
