Galanin in the Central Nervous System: A Review

  • Chapter
Current Aspects of the Neurosciences

Abstract

In 1983 a 29 amino acid peptide was isolated and sequenced from the small intestine of pigs and has been named galanin (GAL: Tatemoto et al., 1983). Synthesis of this peptide was reported shortly thereafter (Yajima et al., 1985, 1986). A cDNA library and nucleotide sequence of different clones encoding the preproGAL-precursor has been demonstrated for porcine medullary GAL (Rokaeus and Brownstein, 1986). Recently cDNA libraries of GAL have been published of rat hypothalamic tissue (Kaplan et al., 1988) and oestrogen induced prolactin secreting pituitary tumours (Vrontakis et al., 1987).

This work is dedicated to the memory of Dr Ulrich Weiss (1908–1989).
