Abstract
I first ‘met’ Edward Boyle as an undergraduate, through the medium of Any Questions in the early 1950s. Television was a rarity, interest in politics was intense, and this, the most successful of all radio programmes, with a weekly audience of 16 million, first introduced me not only to Edward but to Hugh Gaitskell, Tony Benn, Quintin Hailsham, Bob Boothby and Michael Foot, all of whom subsequently became close personal friends, and several of them parliamentary colleagues.
