Abstract
Businessmen are often their own worst enemy. We read in the newspaper reports that the prosecution in the alleged Guinness scandal trial in the Crown Court said that Mr Saunders was so anxious to win the bid he was making that he made secret and illegal agreements to boost Guinness shares, neither caring for the public who might be cheated nor the shareholders whose funds would be squandered. When we read this we shrug our shoulders and say, ‘What do you expect from businessmen?’ In the same way, we consider the thousands of people who entrusted their money to Barlow Clowes to secure good investments for their old age, as foolish to have done so.
