Abstract

Timber has been used structurally longer than any other material. It still forms the floors and roofs of the majority of domestic buildings, except where fire safety requires the use of less flammable materials. In recent years it has become popular as the prefabricated carcase of houses — a popularity that has waned for a variety of reasons, although not the fault of the wood itself.
