Abstract
Child protection is the promotion of decisive action to prevent the maltreatment of children. While the majority of health-based child protection work takes place in community settings, nurses working in paediatric ambulatory care are likely to meet child protection issues in the course of their work. Nurses may need to develop their unique role in recognising and responding to cases of possible abuse and neglect. This work is both multidisciplinary and multiagency and involves working in partnership with the child and their family. Although there has been a tradition of limited support, advice and training in child protection available to paediatric nurses, this chapter provides an outline of the child protection framework and describes one model of practice, developed within an acute hospital trust, that is meeting the challenges of child protection and developing a possible way forward for good practice elsewhere.
