A Knowledge-Based Planning System for the Multi-Product Assembly Lines

Abstract

Generally, for a multi-product assembly line, a group of products are selected on the basis of demand volume. operational similarity and operational divisibility. Systematic planning for the assembly line of these products is carried out by collecting the information for product description, operational requirement and auxiliary- parts / subassembly requirements. A Knowledge-Based System is developed for the planning stage as a pre-requisite of the assembly line designing. Various issues like economical cycle time, parallel line, parallel station, type of line, grouping of tasks, and selecting a suitable side for each operator on the line are considered and resolved by the Knowledge-Based System. The Knowledge-Based System is developed in AM: an Expert System Shell. The application of the system is demonstrated with the help of an example.
